Friday Night Funkin RPG: A Turn-Based Experiment

Friday Night Funkin RPG takes the rhythm game universe into unexpected territory. Instead of timed arrow presses, you battle Daddy Dearest in a turn‑based combat system reminiscent of classic Earthbound. This project is a creative experiment — expect bugs, enjoy the charm, and witness a developer learning in public.

Combat Controls and Mechanics

Use your keyboard to command Boyfriend in battle:

  • X – Back (exit menus, but beware: pressing Back after viewing stats makes Dad attack you for free)
  • W – Attacks (more attack types planned)
  • D – Defense (standard block)
  • S – Stats (view your current numbers, but Dad will sucker‑punch you when you exit)
  • Q – View character sprites (Whitty, Pico, Daddy Dearest, Matt)

Additionally, the June 12 update added Defend – a protective move that lasts longer than the standard Protect but blocks less damage. Choose wisely based on the situation.

Visuals, Audio, and Inspirations

All battle sprites were hand‑drawn in Procreate by the solo developer, giving the game a raw, personal art style. The only exceptions are the restart? and lose... text elements. The low health warning sound comes directly from Pokémon Black and White, adding a layer of nostalgic tension to close battles.

The project was inspired by this YouTube video and built upon the original Friday Night Funkin created by ninja_muffin99, PhantomArcade3k, evilsk8r, and kawaisprite (Newgrounds version).

Version History and Known Issues

The developer actively updates the game. Notable changes:

  • June 2 – Added game over screen and low HP battle sound.
  • June 3 – Fixed problems with Noodles and Pizza (likely healing items).
  • June 12 – Added Defend command.

Important warnings:

  • Pressing Back while performing other actions (like protecting, attacking, or healing) may cause glitches — future fixes are planned.
  • There is currently no victory condition or win screen.
  • The developer says: "I'll still update this, fix this, and etc."

Play Friday Night Funkin RPG online for free right now. It’s a weird, wonderful experiment that proves FNF mods can go far beyond rhythm games. Check back regularly for new attacks, bug fixes, and possibly a full Earthbound‑styled adventure someday.
